Promethean Sun, Nocturne, all that jazz

Yo, sorry that it’s been a while. I would make some promises that I’d be a better and more frequent blogger in the future but fact is I’ve said that before and still I lapse. Let’s just say, I’ll blog when I can but when in the midst of a serious bout of writing I just don’t always have the time.

So, some thoughts of Promethean Sun. Well, I’m obviously hugely pleased it has been so popular. I never actually looked at all the Facebook stuff I’d be hearing about bemoaning BL’s decision to make this limited ed, nor will I. I wrote this story knowing that it wouldn’t be read by all the fans, at least not right now (it will be available in a couple of years, which does suck a bit I suppose), so there’s nothing hugely revelatory in it. I’m working on two other ideas that sort of link to the story, at least in so far that they’re Horus Heresy era and have the Salamanders and Vulkan as their main protagonists. So, sorry if you’re miffed that you didn’t get a copy. I reckon all the absolute die-hards must have one, though. Despite initial reports, due to the website kind of breaking, Promethean Sun was available for a few days. It’s great being the one who starts something (i.e. the first ever HH limited ed novella) but you’re also kind of a guinea pig for finding out the wrinkles in the system.

Okay, enough of that. On to Nocturne. I’m about 56,000 words in and finally starting to see how this thing is going to shape up. Wow, third books in trilogies are really hard to write. There was so much to remember, so much time opening old files from the previous two novels and checking things. At times it’s been hellish.

I guess that’s part of the reason I’m sat in my kitchen with Shakespeare chewing my cabinets and causing general carnage, and not out enjoying the holiday time. I booked three extra days off you see. On account of the Royal Wedding malarky, it sort of turns into an eleven day holiday instead of two chunky weekends. I took the three days. I’m planning on reaching 70,000 words by the end of it and having a big fat slice of the novel done; I just needed this blog time as a warm-up.

Oh, I have a short story to write too. That, I promised my editor for the end of this uber-break. Depending on whether or not I get that 70k in the bag will determine the truth of that statement. I figured that if I write 2k a day for the entire break (with time off to watch movies, go out, have a few beers, go tobogganing, train for a half-marathon/triathlon – see how my time is so full?) then I’d get to the golden mark of 70k. If I get ahead and do some bonus words then I’ll get on to the short story too. It’s only 5k but could be a bit of a derailer as far as the novel is concerned, so I need to be careful.

In other writing news, if you’re in and around Leeds next Saturday then get your butts over to Travelling Man for about 1pm. I’ll be there signing Fall of Damnos and anything you put in front of me with my name on it. I’ll also answer questions about Promethean Sun and the Tome of Fire trilogy if you’ve still got any.

Okay, I reckon that’ll do by way of warm-up. Enjoy the time off if you’ve got it; if not, don’t work too hard. Catch you later.

Promethean Sun still shining… just!

Wow, what a crazy ass day it’s been. Between actually working, I’ve been checking out the BL site as Promethean Sun sold out in just a few hours. It was so fast, we’d done over a 1,000 in one hour and pretty much broke the website in the process.

A huge thank you to everyone who bought a copy. I thoroughly hope you’ll enjoy it. This is kind of part one of a much longer HH saga for the Salamanders that I’m going to continue next year but I can’t tell you how (I hate it when people do that – sorry ;) ). Oh, and the eagle-eyed readers amongst you should be on the look out for a cheeky link to current 40K and the Salamanders series which I also write.

If you didn’t manage to get your hands on a copy of the novella then fear not for because we broke the website and the staggering demand for this product, it actually had to be taken off sale just before we ran out. There are a few copies left (not many, mind you) and you have a second chance to order one at 12pm (GMT) Monday April 18th…

A link to the BL site with a few more details is right here.

Promethean Sun is released!

My new Horus Heresy novella featuring Vulkan and the Salamanders is released today.

There will only be 3,000 copies printed and they’re at less than half already. If you don’t want to miss out, get over to the BL site post haste…

Here’s the linky…

Entering the Grid – Tome of Fire goes Digital!

You can tell I’ve got a Tron: Legacy kick happening (man, that soundtrack is awesome – I’m listening to it now).

Another quickie, before a long-y. This time I want to tell you all that the first two novels in the Tome of Fire trilogy, Salamander and Firedrake are now available as e-book digital downloads from BlackLibrary.com. I’ve embedded a link to guide you straight to the appropriate page on the site.

I know this is a welcome development for lots of fans with their ipads, e-readers and kindles. The sons of Vulkan have officially joined the digital evolution (should that be, rather than revolution). With Fireborn already available as an MP3 download there’s a whole bunch of great Salamanders content out there. I understand this is a trend set to continue with further digital editions at the BL Digital grid expands further into the future. In related news, you can also buy the rather excellent Thunder from Fenris as an MP3 download too. :)

A cheeky little tidbit on the grapevine is that Vulkan’s Shield might very well be getting the audio treatment fairly soon-ish. I can’t really confirm or deny this, but this is the rumour. Hopefully, this will please fans who enjoyed this little 1,000 word or so prequel story to the Tome of Fire trilogy. Fingers crossed that this gets the download treatment too. Keep yours eyes fixed on the BL site and this blog for further updates.

By way of a final update, I’m putting the last thousand words or so into Promethean Sun this weekend. It’s going great and the concept art for the cover looks amazing. All will be revealed very soon. Again, keep your attention on the BL site for details on when this exclusive Horus Heresy novella is available to buy.

Okay, that’s probably enough blatant product plugging for today. Ta, ta for now!

Promethean progress…

Howdy folks,

Since it appears I’m under quite close scrutiny, I figured I should blog something today.

Lately (and this evening after work, in fact), I’ve been working on Promethean Sun which has just breached the 18,500 words mark. Woot! I’m planning on a full weekend again at the keyboard starting tomorrow where I hope to break in the mid-20,000 by the end of the day on Sunday.

I think I’ve said before that I usually write in ’sessions’. Basically, because I’m not a full-time writer and tend to be working on the same project when I do write, I have to have short bursts with plenty of breaks so I don’t kind of go stale or mental. That way, by building up a 1,000 words here, another 1,000 there I find that by the end of my writing day I’ll have a healthy chunk done and still be sane (ish…).

Usually, I’ll do a morning session from about 9am (after coffee and a bagle) until 12am, break for an hour or two for lunch (it depends on how the words are flowing) and then pick up at 2pm until 4pm, then, if I still feel I’ve got some more in me I’ll have a final 6pm until 8pm session and then crash for the evening. Vegging out in front of a movie is preferable and nothing too brain taxing either.

Specifically, Promethean Sun is going very well and I’m loving the challenge of writing in the Heresy era and all the cool things I can do with a character like Vulkan. I won’t say any more than that (as I’ve already been slapped for talking about it at all), but hopefully I’ll be done and dusted very soon.

I feel like I’ve got some good momentum going at the moment with 1,000 – 1,5000 words in the weekdays and (hopefully) a solid 6,000 – 8,000 words at the weekend. I don’t usually like to work all weekend and prefer Sunday off but deadlines are tight and needs must.

Okies, that’s the writing update for tonight. That’ll keep some folks happy, methinks. I’ll try and blog something tomorrow, depending on how the writing pans out.

Night, night. :)
