There’s hope!
It’s been pretty well documented in this blog that a bit of a personal crisis has set Firedrake on the rails a little bit. Well, I reckon I might have turned a corner with it.
After some serious thinking, re-planning, honing and so on, I am very happy to report that I’ve cracked the 10,000 word mark.
In a book that’ll likely span to 100,000 words minimum, this might not sound like much but it is a BIG deal. This is a good, lengthy chunk of prose down for the novel (plus some change, too) and it’s allowed me, at long bloody last, to get my head into the game as it were.
One night I was so obsessed with the next scenes and some incidental, character-building stuff that I wanted to do I utilised the memo function on my phone and tapped my notes into it as I laid in the dark with only the screen for illumination! I’ve had creative lightning in the shower (shocking), which is a great, great sign.
I can reveal that after a fairly provocative prologue, the novel starts with a bang. There’s action pretty soon in proceedings and it underpins everything else that follows.
Something else I wanted to do in the book was add a little more flesh to some of the more popular secondary characters from Salamander, so expect to see them making a fairly swift appearance in the narrative.
All in all, I’m very happy with how it’s all going. There’s still a long slog ahead but a little confidence and belief can take you a long way.
Here’s to the next 10,000…

Ten thousand is good. I generally start feeling positive when I hit 20,000, but that’s because I usually aim for about 80,000 on a completed manuscript.
