Salamander update

Again, sorry folks that I’m just not blogging as prolifically as I used to and that the entries are quite short. I’ll get back there, I will…

Anyway, just a quick progress report for you and a juicy extra that put a smile on my face. Fireborn the new Salamander audio drama released next year has been signed off and the short story is currently being reformatted into a script (something I didn’t have to do this time -yay!). I wrote the piece with it being committed to audio in mind but my editor also asked me just to submit it in short story format for a potential ‘in print’ re-release later down the line. Good news for all you people campaigning to see all of the audio dramas in print.

With that now out of the way (though I do need to write a couple of short bios for Tsu’gan and Praetor who star in it), I’ve started work on my Fear the Alien short story, ‘Prometheus Requiem’. After a slow start, I’m now about a quarter of the way through and making good progress. I even managed a trip to Waterstones yesterday with the netbook and got a 1,000 words down over a gingerbread latte (I make no apologies for my coffee choice), something I haven’t done in a while. On a high when I left, I was slightly disconcerted by the wretched weather and glad to get home again.

In related news, I had the good fortune to discover that Salamander is now into its 3rd printing – huzzah! So a huge thanks to all of you who bought the book (and keep on buying it, it seems). Cheers! Don’t think I’ve ever had a novel go into a 3rd printing, so it’s a real confidence boost to me that it’s doing so well. It actually really inspires me and fires me up for Firedrake, the sequel I’ll be working on after all these short stories are out of the way. It might have to go on hold a little longer, though, as I may be doing something for Black Library Live in February, which has a shorter deadline. Watch this space for more.

So that’s about it for now. Working hard, lots more in the pipe, trying to increase the bloggage.

See ya later.

What? What’s that? “Salamander” is in its third printing? Huzzah, indeed!

What? What’s that? “Firedrake” might have to go on hold a little longer? Dammit!

Seriously, congratulations on the third print run. I’ve lent my copy of a few mates already and no sooner have they finished reading they’ve run out and bought their own copies!

Fair play to you on the choice of coffee there, Nick. I have to admit to having dabbled there myself. My caffeine fix of choice remains the mocha though, it must be said…

  • Pyroriffic Says:

Fie on both of your coffee choices.

The Caramel Macchiato wins hands-down every time, although I confess that the gingerbread latte has its place in my coffee-loving palate every now and then. (The toffee nut one is nice, too).

What, books? Writing? I’m sorry, I thought this was a coffee post!

    *slouches away, embarrassed*

  • Dan Beresford Says:

I’ve always been partial to an Orange Toffee Mocha myself, our local ‘indie’ net cafe makes them really well. Mmmm… coffee.

‘grats on the third printing. Impressive, and well deserved.

Black Library Live – someone jog my memory on what that is? The BL site was down when last I looked, so I have nought but a vague whiff of what you are talking about.

Is it something I should pencil into my calendar for booking a day off work?

  • Pyroriffic Says:

    Orange Toffee Mocha??

    WANT!

    *pout*

  • Jon Green Says:

A simple hot chocolate with a shot of coconut/caramel/vanilla does it for me. ;-)

Congrats on the third printing. Salamander is currently top of my ‘to read’ pile.

  • Xhalax Says:

Mocha for me in the coffee stakes.

And well done on the third print of Salamander! I’m very glad that it’s done well as it’s an awesome book and we’ve all waited patiently to read tales from the Sons of Vulkan an you’ve done them proud Mr. Kyme.

*tips her hat and raises her coffee mug*

  • Nick Kyme Says:

Thanks everyone for the kind words and all that jazz. :)

Orange Toffee Mocha sounds like the king of coffees! I raise my sceptre to thee!

  • Pyroriffic Says:

    You have a sceptre?

Actually… yeah. I could see that.

  • Dan Beresford Says:

Well the Black Library offices are in the Ivory Tower aren’t they?

I can see Nick lording over it from his editors throne… erm… desk, I meant desk.

Orange Toffee Mocha’s are the biz. You get some Belgian chocolate powder, mix it in with the coffee, add to that some orange syrup, and steamed milk. Top it off with whipped cream, crumbled cadbury flake and a hefty dose of toffee sauce.

If you get it to go the lid traps in the heat which melts the cream and lets the toffee sink into the coffee, which melts it and it mixes in nicely, leaving you with one hell of a coffee.

    Dammit now I want one…

  • Pyroriffic Says:

I see Nick sitting in a throne made of rejected manuscripts, sipping an Orange Toffee Mocha whilst perusing his third print run with glorious satisfaction.

    And lo, it was good.

  • Dreadnought Says:

I loved Salamander! It was definitely one of the top Space Marine books I have ever read! I can’t wait to get Firedrake! I’m sure it’s going to be just as great as the first one, probably even better!

  • Eric Slaney Says:

After listing to Thunder From Fenris

    I can’t wait for Fireborn

It is my favorite out of all the BL short stories

I can’t wait to listen to it at work.

  • Eric Slaney Says:

    Whoops

In my editing I forgot to put back that

    I loved Fires Of War

That is my Favorite short story

Can’t wait for all things Salamander

  • Christ Painkiller Says:

Congratulations on the 3rd printing of your Salamander novel. Looking forward to all the new releases coming next year. Check out my Salamanders fan page (and all the other pages dedicated to each legion and chapter). If you wish, link to it (it links to this page). Best regards, Christ.

  • Peter Says:

just blackcoffee with two lumps of sugar, that’s the best coffee there is ;)

and ofcourse congrats with the 3rd print of Salamander!!

  • Ali Says:

Loved Salamander, a much more hopeful approach to the lore than usual. Indeed a breath of fresh air.

Also many thanks for not going down the obvious route with the various characters, and avoiding some of the tropes commonly used by your contempories at the Black Library.
