One of his inspirations for this was the movie Seven Samurai (which I've not seen, but now want to). The Avengers pulled off the visual battle well because the viewer knew where each character was and what they were doing. Better yet, at one point there's a shot with no cuts, moving through New York from Avenger to Avenger, seeing all six work cohesively. Iron Man 3 didn't do that. The suits, Mks 8-41, simply showed up and flew around and did battle. The viewer sees a lot of pretty action but there's no sense of the overall conflict and what any of them might be trying to achieve, or even any sense of what individual suits might be capable of (bar one or two exceptions). Only Mk 42 had emotional weight, because it had been introduced properly. I think there's a trick they missed: Mks 1-7 should've been in that fight. I know the whole point of them being destroyed earlier was to show Stark as he is without his suits (and heighten the jeopardy, since every subsequent suit is a prototype built when he couldn't sleep, and is untested in combat), but those seven suits had resonance with the viewers and would've brought a lot more to the battle, especially as each was destroyed. Overall, though: very enjoyable. I might go see it again too.
