A momentary digression: I was reading the Order of the Stick hardcopy collections recently, and the author Rich Burlew talks about how to visualise a battle narratively, placing characters in all the important places so the reader is in no confusion about what's going on. One of his inspirations for this was the movie Seven Samurai (which I've not seen, but now want to).

The Avengers pulled off the visual battle well because the viewer knew where each character was and what they were doing. Better yet, at one point there's a shot with no cuts, moving through New York from Avenger to Avenger, seeing all six work cohesively.

Iron Man 3 didn't do that. The suits, Mks 8-41, simply showed up and flew around and did battle. The viewer sees a lot of pretty action but there's no sense of the overall conflict and what any of them might be trying to achieve, or even any sense of what individual suits might be capable of (bar one or two exceptions). Only Mk 42 had emotional weight, because it had been introduced properly.

I think there's a trick they missed: Mks 1-7 should've been in that fight. I know the whole point of them being destroyed earlier was to show Stark as he is without his suits (and heighten the jeopardy, since every subsequent suit is a prototype built when he couldn't sleep, and is untested in combat), but those seven suits had resonance with the viewers and would've brought a lot more to the battle, especially as each was destroyed.

Overall, though: very enjoyable. I might go see it again too.

Weird. I have no idea. That's very odd. I shall look into it and see if I've pressed some button somewhere I shouldn't have or whatever. :S

I would love to volunteer my soul for beta reading, but curiously what sort of feedback are you looking for? People who are lored up to the max, people who are smart with words and where full stops are meant to be, or rain man type spell checkers?

I'd give anything to be a beta reader for the Salamanders. Absolutely dying to see Elysius again, and Val'in. Can't wait to find out more about this new trilogy. :)

ehrm a bit late... but beta readers... seriously?
i think i would do a lot to get my hands on some beta book scripts about my favorite chapter!

btw...
i would prefer a novella about tu'shan in stead of he'stan, the best would be about his battle at the bridge on armageddon and a bit of kicking some marines malevolent butts... and commander dante hailing him for being such a bad ass! :D

btw nick:
could you think about a marines malevolent novel? i think they are a chapter worth getting their own story.
